The portion divided for daily reading — one aliyah each day, Sunday through Shabbat.
In six days God creates the heavens and the earth — light, sky and seas, dry land and plants, sun and moon and stars, fish and birds, land animals, and finally humanity, made in God's image, male and female. On the seventh day God rests, and blesses the day and sets it apart.
A second account follows the man formed from dust and placed in the garden of Eden, with its two trees — the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The woman is built from the man's side. The serpent persuades her to eat from the forbidden tree, the man eats as well, and the two are clothed by God and sent out of the garden, with words of consequence spoken over the serpent, the woman, and the man.
Outside the garden, Cain kills his brother Abel and is sent to wander, marked so that none will kill him. Adam's line continues through Seth, ten generations down to Noah, with lifespans stretching into the hundreds of years. As humanity multiplies, the earth fills with wickedness; God regrets making humankind and resolves to blot it out — but Noah finds favor in God's eyes.
