Noach (נֹחַ) — "Noah (rest)" Book of Genesis. Torah: Genesis 6:9-11:32. Noah builds the ark and survives the flood with his family and the animals. God sets the rainbow as a covenant never again to destroy the earth by water. Humanity unites to build the Tower of Babel and is scattered across the world. Torah: Genesis 12:1-17:27. God calls Abram to leave his land for a place he will be shown, promising to make him a great nation. Abram journeys to Canaan, parts from Lot, and is promised offspring as countless as the stars. The covenant of circumcision is given, and Abram and Sarai become Abraham and Sarah. Isaac is born and Hagar and Ishmael are sent away. The portion closes with the binding of Isaac on Mount Moriah. Chayei Sara (חַיֵּי שָֹרָה) — "The life of Sarah" Book of Genesis. Torah: Genesis 23:1-25:18. Sarah dies and Abraham buys the cave of Machpelah to bury her. His servant is sent to find a wife for Isaac and returns with Rebekah. Abraham dies and is buried beside Sarah by Isaac and Ishmael. Rebekah bears twins, Esau and Jacob, who struggle from the womb. Esau sells his birthright for a bowl of stew, and Jacob, with Rebekah’s help, receives the blessing meant for Esau. He works for Laban, marries Leah and Rachel, and fathers eleven sons and a daughter. He prospers, then leaves with his family as tension with Laban grows. Jacob prepares to meet Esau, wrestles a divine figure through the night, and is renamed Israel. The brothers reconcile peacefully. Vayeshev (וַיֵּשֶׁב) — "And he settled" Book of Genesis. Torah: Genesis 37:1-40:23. Joseph’s dreams and his father’s favor provoke his brothers, who sell him into Egypt. Judah’s account with Tamar is told. In Egypt Joseph rises in Potiphar’s house, is falsely accused, and imprisoned, where he interprets the dreams of fellow prisoners. His brothers come to buy grain and do not recognize him. Joseph tests them, holding Simeon and demanding Benjamin be brought down. Judah pleads for Benjamin, and Joseph reveals himself to his brothers in tears. Jacob and the whole family come down to Egypt and settle in Goshen. Joseph administers Egypt through the famine. Jacob blesses Joseph’s sons and each of his own twelve sons in turn, then dies and is buried in Canaan. Joseph reassures his brothers and forgives them. Joseph dies in Egypt, asking that his bones be carried up to the promised land. Torah: Exodus 1:1-6:1. A new Pharaoh enslaves Israel and orders the Hebrew boys killed; Moses is born and raised in Pharaoh’s house. He flees to Midian, and God calls to him from the burning bush. Moses returns to Egypt to demand Israel’s release. The first seven plagues fall on Egypt — blood, frogs, lice, wild beasts, pestilence, boils, and hail. Pharaoh’s heart remains hardened. The final three plagues — locusts, darkness, and the death of the firstborn — break Pharaoh’s resistance. Israel is commanded to keep the Passover and mark their doorposts. Beshalach (בְּשַׁלַּח) — "When he let go" Book of Exodus. Torah: Exodus 13:17-17:16. Pharaoh pursues Israel to the sea, which splits so they cross on dry ground while the Egyptians drown. Israel sings the Song of the Sea. In the wilderness God provides manna, quail, and water, and Israel battles Amalek. God speaks the Ten Commandments to the whole people. A body of civil and ethical laws is given — servants, damages, property, justice, and care for the stranger, widow, and orphan. The festivals and Sabbath are commanded. Israel pledges “we will do and we will hear,” and the covenant is sealed. Torah: Exodus 30:11-34:35; Numbers 19:1-22. A census is taken by half-shekel, and the artisans Bezalel and Oholiab are appointed. While Moses is on the mountain, Israel makes the golden calf; Moses breaks the tablets and intercedes. God reveals His attributes of mercy, and Moses receives a second set of tablets. The people give so generously they must be told to stop. Bezalel and the craftsmen build the Tabernacle, its furnishings, and the priestly vestments. Torah: Exodus 38:21-40:38. An account is given of all the materials used in the Tabernacle. The priestly garments are completed and everything is brought to Moses. Vayikra (וַיִּקְרָא) — "And He called" Book of Leviticus. Torah: Leviticus 1:1-5:26. The book of Leviticus opens with the laws of sacrifice — the burnt, grain, peace, sin, and guilt offerings. Each offering and its procedure is described for both the community and the individual. A wide range of ethical and ritual commands follow — honoring parents, leaving the corners of the field for the poor, honest dealing, and loving your neighbor as yourself.
